Views

An engineer reading the checkout map wants “Orders DB · PostgreSQL” and every queue. Your client wants “Where orders are kept” and none of the plumbing. Two diagrams would drift apart within a month. Two views of one map can’t.

A view decides what one audience sees. An architect’s view and a plain-language view are two ways of showing the same map, so they never drift apart: edit the map and every view changes with it.

A view holds:

  • What’s hidden: parts, lines, zones and notes it doesn’t show. A hidden part’s lines go with it, and a hidden zone’s contents still show.
  • Wording: plain-language names and descriptions that replace the map’s own, such as “Where orders are kept” in place of “Orders DB”.
  • Its audience: technical or non-technical.

A new map starts with one technical view called “Everything”. The showcase examples on the maps home each have a second view in plain words: present one and switch between them to see the difference.

Presenting and sharing go through a view. With more than one view, a picker on the island, beside the mode menu, switches between them.

A view only hides things. Presenting, what it hides is still there, just not drawn, so scenarios and failure drills play on the whole map: a drill that takes down a hidden region still takes down the parts inside it, and the numbers are the map’s own. Nothing on screen names what’s hidden: where a scenario’s results mention it, it’s called “Hidden part” or “Hidden zone”. A story step about something hidden frames what’s still drawn of it, and a step about nothing still drawn shows the whole map and says so.

A share link holds only what its view shows, so it never carries what its audience wasn’t meant to see. A drill on a zone the view hides is aimed at the parts that were in it instead, so it still takes them down. A hidden part can’t travel with the link, so its scenarios play without it there.

A panel to make and edit views in the editor, and collapsed zones drawn as one box, are on the way. Maps made by other tools or by an assistant can already hold several views.
